Greetings to all. The photos posted show something of what has been happening this week. One week of the holidays is over during which time the S1's have had a morning programme at school, others have had chores which they have done very well and there have also been the holiday programme of activities.
On Wednesday Marilyn and I took Matthew, Owen, and Timothy into Kampala to spend the money they earned with the PLE results. It was interesting to see how they spent it. Most of it went on food and drink as you would expect. We also took Christine and had her eyes tested for glasses. She has a stigmatism so now has glasses to correct this which she got today. We hope it will make a difference for her at school.
On Thursday we took a group of 26 children down the road to African Village for a swim. We were so lucky with the weather, it was gloriously sunny all the time we were there. The day before and the day after were both overcast with some spells of rain but we had a day 'out of the box'. A good time was had by all. Thursday was also Dorah's 12th birthday, she has been in NACMU for a year now, so of course there was cake and a party after supper. We slept well that night.
On Friday we had the group that went swimming here for a DVD. We saw 'The Next Karate Kid', which was enjoyed by all. It was good to have something that appealed to all ages, we can recommend it.
Today it has been good seeing the sorts of things the children have been doing. Matthew organised some skater races for the children at the home on the new skaters that have just come. Ezra, Owen, and Joshua helped Aunty Prossy cook chapatis to go with tonight's chicken noodle soup, Timothy made custard to go with pudding tonight so all-in-all it has been a full day.
Nearly time for bed, so till next time
God Bless

Holidays yea
Greetings, we have completed our first day of the holidays and so far so good. The S1 students have a programme of work experience for the mornings so that keeps them busy and the other boys have 'chores' three days a week for part of the morning so today went well. The chores programme has been working well, the children seem to enjoy it and the Aunties/Uncles do too.
The end of term reports were encouraging overall, they could all do better but there is evidence of a better approach to school. We will try to build on this during the holidays and again once they are back at school. Marilyn and I have not been very involved this last term but hope to settle back to helping where we can.
During the last few days a company has been drilling a new bore hole down by the secondary school so that has been of great interest to the boys.
We were delighted last week to get the three boxes of books etc. that we had sent from NZ arrive, after a most remarkable three weeks. We were rapt to get the materials especially the resources donated by Blackboard Jungle, if you are ever in their shop in Havelock North, do tell them how pleased we are with their material.
On the children front, Dominic is making good progress, but please pray for Gideon as he appears to be going through some growing pains and pray that the treatment for TB continues to be effective. Our latest, Nathan, is taking some time to socialise so please pray for him too. Also Pita needs considerable prayer too, she has had a second bout of malaria but also has an infection in her leg which is swollen and painful, please pray that the medication will be effective quickly. Marilyn has recovered from her malaria, had a glitch on Sunday with the onset of a migraine but is now OK, life is so much better when we are healthy.
We are without full power again (have only lights on generator) and the battery is running low on the laptop so I'd better sign off here.
Till next time
God Bless

Sunday night
Greetings, it is Sunday night and we are always glad when the day is over. Today was Richard's 9th birthday, the fifth birthday since returning from NZ so another party was in order. We have gotten quite good at providing a party for 30 or so children.
In other news, Marilyn has another bout of malaria at present. It started Friday after assemblies, was diagnosed yesterday morning so she has now taken two days of medication and is beginning to feel better which is encouraging. It really saps her energy levels and makes her tired all the time. Please pray that she will continue to improve.
We also have a new child, a sweet boy whom we have named Nathan. He was found abandoned in a sugar plantation (hence the 'sweet boy') and is thought to be about 9 months old. He is severely malnourished but seems to be responding to love and attention. He has beautiful big eyes. I think he is child number 137.
Just one more week before the holidays, only three weeks this time but I'm sure we will be ready for a holiday after that.
That is all for now, it is time for bed
till next time, God Bless

We're back
We're back and all things look positive for me to complete this. We have power, we have internet, we have time, so here goes. (Also have water-but that doesn't count!)
Our trip to NZ was fantastic for us, we had a marvelous time meeting friends and family in Auckland, Putaruru, Havelock North, Hastings, Waikanae, Blenheim, Ohope and in many places in between. The highlight for me was obviously meeting my two half-sisters for the first time after 50 years of not knowing them. We look forward to maintaining contact with Laurel and Jeff, and Merryn. The highlight for Marilyn would be meeting Eth, one of her bridesmaids at our wedding whom we had not seen for 28 years. We enjoyed visiting schools and churches to share about the work done in NACMU and it was especially good to have time with our children and their partners. It had been about 7 years since we had all been together so it was good to spend time with them. We appreciate that they support us in what we do too. We also are very grateful to our friend Ruth for putting us up, putting up with us, lending her car, allowing us to use the beach house at Waihi and for being a most efficient PA in organising our appointments with the Doctor, the Dentist, the Optician, the invitations to dinner and the meetings/other appointments that we had. Without her we would have accomplished only a fraction of what we managed to do so thank you Ruth.
Arriving back we had some difficulty settling back as there was a lot to catch up on, but we have just had a wonderful Easter weekend. On Thursday there were Easter Carols presented by the schools (Nursery, Primary and Secondary), on Friday we had a Walk of the Cross in the early evening, starting in the light but finishing in darkness. Saturday was the painting of eggs ready for the Easter Egg hunt after Sunday School and then church as usual at 2pm. We had a special Bar-B-Q tea followed by a DVD on Jesus. Today a team of Canadians who are visiting provided some activities for the children, so now they are all in bed tired and ready to go back to school tomorrow. Needless to say, we are ready for that too.
Our darling Rhode is absolutely delightful at present, she gives us beaming smiles when she sees us and lots of cuddles and she has grown up so much while we were away. Her character and personality is developing and, apart from wanting to hit the punching bag each day when I take her back to the home, she has a sweet nature. We celebrated her second birthday last week and so far she hasn't developed the 2yr old tantrums. The photos of her that we have posted show what a gorgeous wee girl she is.
We have slotted back into the busyness of church, Sunday School, school, family unit life and containers quite easily, tomorrow I will need to do another round of crocs at the school (about 30 pairs needed) so that will take most of the day.
Please pray for NACMU as an organisation, especially the leadership and management as they chart some potentially difficult times ahead. The political climate in Uganda is not terribly good at the moment and this has some effects on us. We are not in danger at all, but the atmosphere in the country is unsettled, a bit like NZ too? Please also pray for Marilyn and I and that we may find a suitable Aunty to take over this house to enable us to move out in order to take a more coordinating role. We do love the boys, but find we get tired by the end of the day. Guess there is a reason God did not make us able to be natural parents at aged 60!
Well, that's about all for now, till next time (which I hope will not be too long in coming)
God Bless
